Video above and images to the left are from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The movie is basically about his quest to find the Holy Grail, which is the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper. This scene is from close to the end of the movie where Indiana Jones has to complete 3 tasks to gain access to the Grail Room. In this task, he has to take a leap of faith to cross a large bottomless pit to get to the other side. When he first sees the gap to cross, there seems to be no walkway to allow him passage across. The book he has with him says that "Only in a leap from the lion's head may he prove his worth." He then realizes he has to take a leap of faith and as he does, he discovers there was a bridge there all along. It was simply hidden by a technique called anamorphosis making it look like the rock face of the opposing wall so that only someone with true faith could cross. In this way, the bridge uses the illusion of depth to hide a surface right before his eyes. These specific frames show the camera panning around to the side after he takes his first step to reveal the bridge to the viewer. The images below are some more examples of anamorphosis from street artist Julian Beever and architectural interiors.
